Justicia gendarussa Burm.f.

Justicia gendarussa Burm. f. leaves was found to be traditionally used as male contraceptive agent by several ethnic groups in central part of Papua, Indonesia. Previous study showed that J. gendarussa could inhibit mice spermatozoa penetration onto mice ovum. It was found that J. gendarussa could be developed as contraceptive medicine. Hence, it is necessary to conduct research on its toxicity. One of the premedical researches which have carried on this research was subacute toxicity test.
The aim of this research was to observe the influence of water fraction of J. gendarussa leaves on rabbit’s liver and kidney functions. The parameters used on this research were SGOT, SGPT, Alkaline phosphatase, Blood Urea Level, and creatinine level. Research was carried out by administrating the treatment groups with oral preparation of of J. gendarussa leaves water fraction once daily for 45 days (1,5 times of rabbit spermatogenesis cycle). The doses of J. gendarussa water fraction for each treatment groups were 579,48; 482,90 and 340,87 mg/kg BW. Rabbit serum samples were collected and measured by Automatic Hitachi Analyzer 902. Data then were analyzed by paired t test. Result showed that J. gendarussa leaves in the three doses did not influence rabbit’s liver and kidney functions.
